In the sixth century BC, there existed 16 large states which was known as Mahajanapadas in ancient India.

According to Anguttara Nikaya, sixteen Mahajanapadas were :
Kasi, Kosala, Anga, Magadha, Vajji, Malla, Chedi, Vatsa, Kuru, Panchala, Matsya, Surasena, Assaka, Avanti, Gandhara and Kamboj.
