Delhi Sultanate was an Islamic empire based in Delhi that stretched over large parts of the Indian subcontinent for 320 years.
Five dynasties ruled over the Delhi Sultanate sequentially - the Mamluk or Slave dynasty (1206–1290) A.D., the Khalji dynasty (1290–1320) A.D., the Tughlaq dynasty (1320–1414) A.D., the Sayyid dynasty (1414–1451) A.D., and the Lodi dynasty (1451–1526) A.D.
In this section, we are sharing concise notes on Saiyyad Dynasty (1290 - 1326).
Saiyyad Dynasty (1414 - 1451)
KHIZR KHAN (1414 - 1421) :
- The founder of the Saiyyad Dynasty was Khizr Khan.
- Khizr Khan did not assume the title of Sultan but he was comfortable with Rayat-i-Ala.
- As a reward for his service, Taimur gave him the governorship of Multan.
- He ruled Delhi independently for 7 years.
MUBARAK SHAH(1421 - 1433):
- After the death of Khizr Khan his son Mubarak Shah became the ruler of Delhi.
- He fought constantly against the Rajputs, The Muslim rulers of Malwa and Jaunpur and also Mughals from Kabul.
- He was killed by the nobles in his own court.
MUHAMMAD SHAH (1434 - 1443):
- He was always busy acting against conspirators and gradually lost control over his nobles.
- He adopted the title 'Shah' and issued the coins of his name.
ALAM SHAH (1443 - 1451):
- Alam Shah was the last ruler of the Saiyyad Dynasty.
- He was the incapable ruler.
- Hamid Khan who was the Wazir of Alam Shah, invited Bahlol Lodhi to take the charge of the Army and after realizing that it would be difficult to continue as Sultan, then Alam Shah left for Badaun.
