Religious Movement :

In the 6th century BC people in India sought a liberal and humanistic religion in order to get rid of the superstitions, prejudices, inequalities, costly ritual etc. In this situation the responded religion was originated.


The main objectives of the religious protest movement were :
  1. Liberal and Rationalist theology ( Opposition to Karma and Reborn.
  2. Contradiction of Cast System.
  3. Demand for Justice and Equality.
  4. Development of urbanization and Trade.
Out of 63 religions that originated in India against the complexities of the vedic Brahmanical religion, Buddhism and Jainism were the most popular in that time.

  • Buddhism was founded by Gautama Buddha.
  • Gautama Buddha was born in 563 BC at lumbini in Kapilavastu (Nepal).
  • Original name was Siddhartha.
  • His father was Suddhadhana, the ruler of Kapilavastu.
  • His Mother was Mahamaya of the Kosalan Dynasty.
  • Mahamaya died in child birth and Siddhartha was brought up by his step-mother Gautami.
  • Siddharth was married to his cousin Yashodhara and had a son named Rahul.
  • Buddha got nirvana at  the age of 35 years, at Uruvela on the bank of river Nranjana.
  • Buddha died in 483 BC at Kushinagar.
  • Buddha's Last words were "All composite things, struve diligently".
  •  Buddha's first sermon is called as "Dharma Chakraparivartana".

Jainism :

  • Jainism was founded by Vardhana Mahavira.
  • Mahavira was born in 540 BC at Kundagram in Vaishali.
  • His Father was Siddhartha and mother was Trishala.
  • Mahavira was married to Yashodha.
  • Mahavira  left home at the age of 30 and wondered for around 12 years.
  • He obtained Kaivalya (Knowledge) at the age of 42 on the bank of river Rijupalika near village Jimbhikagrama.
  • Mahavira's first disciple was Jamali.
  • Mhavira is regarded as the 24th Tirthankara.
  • First Tirthankar was Rishavanath and 23rd was Parsvanath.
  • Mahavira died in 468 BC at Pavapuri in Patna.
  • Jainism does not deny the existence of God but refuses to give God any important part in the universal scheme. Gods are placed lower than Jina.
