Delhi Sultanate Khalji Dynasty


We know there were five dynasties in Sultanate Period. Delhi Sultanate was an Islamic empire based in Delhi that stretched over large parts of the Indian subcontinent for 320 years.
Five dynasties ruled over the Delhi Sultanate sequentially - the Mamluk or Slave dynasty (1206–1290) A.D., the Khalji dynasty (1290–1320) A.D., the Tughlaq dynasty (1320–1414) A.D., the Sayyid dynasty (1414–1451) A.D., and the Lodi dynasty (1451–1526) A.D.
In this section, we are compiling concise notes on Khalji Dynasty (1290 - 1326). Delhi Sultanate or Sultanate Period (1206- 1526) A.D.  is an important topic for all exams. So, we are sharing all important points of this period according to each dynasty separately.

Khalji Dynasty​ (1290-1320) A.D. 

Jalaluddin Khalji (1290 - 1296 A.D.):
  • His coming to power was known as the Khilji revolution killing of Kaiqubad and Kaymurs.
  • Khilji dynasty was founded by Jalaluddin Khilji.
  • He Rebelled against the attack of Mongols under Abdullah.
  • Mongols who settled near Delhi were called the " New Muslims".
  • He began to rule from Kilkhori.
  • During his reign, Devagiri was invaded by Alauddin Khilji ( Ali Gurshap).
  • Jalaluddin Khalji was assassinated by his nephew Alauddin Khilji near Kara.
Alauddin Khalji (1296 -1316 A.D.):

  • The real name of Alauddin Khilji is Ali Gurshap.
  • He was the governor of Kara.
  • Adopted the title of Sikandar-i-Saini.
  • He conquered Gujrat in 1297 A.D. defeating Rai Karan and married Kamla Devi, the queen of Rai Karan.
  • He captured Chittor in 1303 A.D. defeating Rana Ratan Singh.
  • Allauddin captured Ranthambore in 1303 A.D. which was under Hammirdev.
  • Alauddin Khilji sent Malik Kafur to capture South India.
  • Malik Kafur was eunuch.
  • Malik Kafur conquered South India (Devgiri). 
  • Malik Kafur was given the title of Malik Naib.
  • Alauddin Khilji was the first Sultan of Delhi who created a standing army.
  • He was the first Sultan to collect land revenue was based on measurement and Biswa was a unit of measurement.
  • At this time, the use of liquor and intoxicants was prohibited.
  • Social gatherings and festivals without the permission of the Sultan were forbidden.
  • Alauddin Khilji was illiterate but he patronised poets like Amir Khusro and Amir Hasan Dehlvi.
  • Alauddin Khilji built a famous gateway known as Alai Darwaza, Hauz Khas, Mahal Hazaar Satoon, Jamaat Khana Mosque, Alai Minar and a new capital at Siri. 
  • Alauddin Khilji adopted the title of Sikandar-i-Azam-Azam and give Amir Khusro the title of Tut-i-Hind (Parrot of India).

  • His theory of kingship was secular and he proclaimed 'Kingship knows no Kingship' and 'I will do not know if this is lawful and or unlawful, I do whatever I think to be good for the state'.

Qutbuddin Mubarak Shah Khalji (1316 - 1320 A.D.):
  • After the date of Alauddin, Mubarak Khalji acquired the throne.
  • He declared himself Khalifa and took the title 'Al Wasiq Billah'.
  • He was killed and succeeded by Nasiruddin Khusrau Shah.
  • He was the only Hindu convert to sit on the throne of Delhi.
